Singapore hosts an annual Singapore Arts Festival when international and local artists gather in the country to perform in a wide variety of events including music, dance and theatre. The Singapore Arts Festival has become an event for Singapore to showcase its ability to buy international renowned performing arts products.

OPERA

The Singapore Lyric Opera presents western classics like Carmen from time to time. For a taste of traditional Asian opera, check out concerts staged by local operatic associations, such as the Chinese Opera Institute. An appealing variety of operas ranging from Cantonese, Beijing, Hokkien, Malay Bangwasan to Indian Malayalam is organised in Singapore. There is even a Singapore International Cantonese Opera Festival.

While in Singapore, why not sample a more local flavour? Ethnic dance groups offer home-grown and traditional dances, sometimes with a modern twist. Look out for productions by local dance groups such as Sri Warisan (Malay), Bhaskar Academy of Arts, Temple of Fine Arts (Indian), and Dance Ensemble Singapore (Chinese).

ESPLANADE – THEATERS ON THE BAY

In 2003, the Esplanade - "Theaters on the Bay", a center for performing arts, was opened. The Esplanade is also known as "The Durian", due to its resemblance to to the fruit. The Arts House at Old Parliament Lane has also been supportive of local performing arts in recent years.
